Sun Microsystems has announced that the company is building the world’s largest supercomputer named Ranger.

Ranger will house 62,976 CPU cores, 125 terabytes of main memory, 1.7 petabytes of disk space and a whooping 504 teraflops of performance.
The computer will be hosted at the Texas Advanced Computing Center at the University of Texas, Austin. The company also expects that the computer will go online on the first day of 2008.

Ranger will also outshine the reigning boss of supercomputers that has been developed by IBM and is named BlueGene. BlueGene has a performance of just 327 teraflops.

Talking about Ranger, it will house 16,744 quad-core AMD Opteron processors and will consume three megawatts of raw power. This will cost the University a million dollars per year. Sun also stated that the machine’s production timeline is dependent on when AMD is able to crank out the chips which will be used in the computer.

When this new supercomputer comes online, it will help scientists conduct researches on an unbelievable speed and an unprecedented scale. The machine which will be six to seven times larger than any of the existing systems will be used in researches in the field of astrophysics, genomics, nanotechnology and meteorology.

Ranger can also be taken as a thing which will be much common in future. If the chip size goes on decreasing as fast as it is now and the cost of hardware also keeps falling then in the next five to seven years, such machines will be common and better machines would have taken their place.

But for now Ranger is the world’s biggest computer, lets see as to who comes with a better machine...!

The Motorola MOTOJEWEL is literally a fashion phone. Besides the mirror finish of the phone, the vanity case of the phone is a substitute of the make-up bag with the vanity mirror and pockets for tucking in the necessary cosmetics besides the bankcards. The technical features of the jeweled clamshell include shining purple keypad, touch sensitive music control, stereo Bluetooth, 2-megapixel camera, Motorola’s CrystalTalk noise reduction technology and Linux-based OS for quick response. However, it is not the specs that are attractive; it is the external angular design of the clamshell with the dazzling crystal outside that makes it more like a woman’s accessory. This limited edition jeweled phone can be bought from Carphone Warehouse for ₤99 only.

After a long delay, Advanced Micro Devices Inc (AMD) is again coming back with its new microprocessor code named Barcelona to prove it is not a one-hit wonder in chips for server systems.

Barcelona, to be formally known as quad-core Opteron processor, provides calculating engines for the midsize machines, which run websites and other key business programs. AMD CEO, Hector Ruiz will formally launch the microprocessor during an event in San Francisco. AMD’s Barcelona is not only important for an AMD turnaround but also server markets, who are searching for higher performance and lower price microprocessor.

The Barcelona is specifically designed to improve communication between processors. It has an improved circuitry model for complex chores called floating-point calculations. Earlier, dual-processor Opterons had advantage to fetch data from memory chips. AMD’s Barcelona operates at a maximum frequency of 2.0 gigahertz, which is a bit slower than expectations.

Barcelona will come in three different categories for high-performance, standard issue and energy-efficient server models. The two standard and three energy efficient processors are now available for two-socket servers, while the high-performance processors would be available by the end of this year. Two processors for four-socket servers would be available for both standard and energy efficient categories. AMD is adopting a scheme to measure the average power consumption of its chips.

Fujitsu Laboratories has developed a new high-reliability technology for high power gallium nitride (GaN), named high electron-mobility transistors (HEMT). The new technology will make the way for commercialization of high power GaN HEMTs.

The new technology will enable transistor to operate even at high temperature of 200 degrees Celsius for more than one million hours under pinch off condition with a drain voltage of 50 volts (50V). The company will use the GaN HEMTs technology for the high-speed wireless communications market, like atellite communication (VSATs), cellular base stations, WiMAX base stations, and other high-speed wireless communications infrastructure.

Fujitsu has analyzed and discovered that in GaN HEMTs a correlation exists between gate leakage current and reliability. The company observed that the increase in gate leakage current depends on the quality of crystal and the structure of GaN HEMTs. Fujitsu has improved crystal quality and optimized the layer structure to mitigate the electric field in a gallium-nitride HEMT structure with few surface traps by using its proprietary n-type GaN cap layer.

Nokia has introduced new cell-phone accessory designed for users with hearing aids. The Nokia Wireless Loopset is compatible with T-coil-equipped hearing aids or cochlear implants and makes hands-free connections between the hearing aid devices and Bluetooth 2.1-equipped mobile phones. This device can help hearing aid users to enjoy premium audio and handsfree operation of their mobile devices and other compatible audio devices. The Nokia Wireless Loopset provides hearing aid users with a hassle-free and handsfree connection to their mobile phones. It comes with a comfortable neckloop and a single button for call handling. Earlier, people with hearing aids had faced difficulties in using digital mobile phones in noisy environments or due to interference picked up from the radio transmission of the phone. The induction technology has improved the calls to be distortion-free and clear. The HS-67WL has a vibrating alert function to notify users of incoming calls. It will be available worldwide in the first quarter of 2009 with an equivalent price of about $315.

Till now the main guns of the processors industry were just Intel and AMD. Now get ready for some Chinese Chips as well. Peking University has stated that their Microprocessor Research and Development Center has acquired the X86 processor technology.

X86 is a name given to a series of chips developed by Intel. This series began with the 286 microprocessor and includes names like 386, 486 etc. Even the most common processor today that is Pentium 4 is also a seventh-generation X86 processor.

PKUnity Microsystems Technology Co Ltd, a unit sponsored by the university has stated that they are capable of making PCs with the domestically developed processors.

AMD signed a MoU in October 2005, with the Ministry of Science and Technology and Peking University to license AMD x86 microprocessor technology that will enable China to develop low-power processors for UMPCs. This was the highest-level of CPU technology transfer till date.

After studying and researching on the technology, Peking University has successfully developed FPGA. This processor is compatible with both Windows and Linux operating systems.

Chinese have already started to rule the electronics segment of the market and development of “Chinese Chips” will surely give stiff competition to Intel and other who till now were the rulers of the industry.

I can bet that even your best friend or the one with whom you spend most of your time may not be able to analysis your mood at any time. But now all you need is to be extra cautious, as you may also be caught lying with the new software that is under development, which works on analyzing your mood within a second.

The technology that will be used by the software is ‘rapid facial analysis’ and is under development at the German Fraunhofer Institute. The software will see a human face, then find out if it is male or female and will finally analyze his or her expressions. The system checks the facial expressions to know which aspects of the program stimulate a particular strong reaction.

The project manager Dr. Christian Kublbeck at the IIS said:

The special feature of our facial analysis software is that it operates in real time.

The chief facial characteristics that will be used by the system is the shape of the face, the eyes, the eyebrows and the nose.

Before its launch the researchers will first test the system in which it will be given a large quantity of data containing images of faces.

The system will relate 30,000 facial characteristics with the information that it has previously learned. On a normal PC, the calculations are so quick that one’s mood swing is tracked live.

The software package will not only be useful to psychologists but can also be used to test the user-friendliness of computer software programs.

The system also has a scope to check how alert are the drivers while driving cars.

Think of a phone, that you can take as a keychain and use it over any PC or laptop. Yes, I am talking about Vonage V-Phone that perfectly fits on a keychain (look at the image). It is a VoIP phone on a USB stick.

The USB phone is not a substitution for a traditional Vonage phone line. Indeed, you require a different phone number from Vonage for the V-Phone, if you are a Vonage customer and already using a Vonage number.

How it functions
It is very simple and user-friendly. The phone plugs to a USB port of a computer. The device installs itself from the stick. Then, a virtual keyboard is displayed on the screen, where users can click the numbers or type in the number on a keypad.

Features:

•Vonage Talk Software Pre-Loaded

•Detachable Stereo Earpiece Microphone

•250MB Usable Portable Memory Storage

•A New Vonage Phone Number

•Compatible with E911 or Basic 911.

Systems required

Windows 98 SE, 256MB RAM (Windows XP) or higher.

Price

$39.99
