You often capture television shows or any other video files from TV to your laptop or PC. These files run well on the same machine at which downloaded but are copy protected as they are transferred in an encrypted format to maintain the DRM standards to avoid piracy. This new software TiVo File Decoder enables you to decode these encrypted files and play then on any device, you like. The software decodes these files into a MPEG format without any DRM protections that runs well on almost all systems.

This hack basically does not violate the encryption of TiVo’s copyright protection, but uses other Windows functions and the TiVo’s media access key (MAK) to allow the conversion.

However, the software does not use any illegal means to function but still it is something to worry about for the big companies that are always trying to find some alternative to make deals in accordance to DRM scheme. No one can stop these savvy hackers to intervene in process and provide you some easy solutions. Apple’s iTunes, Microsoft’s Windows Media and the Content Scrambling System (CSS) that protects DVDs are just some of the schemes that have fallen to the efforts of coders. A full description of the procedure can be read here.
