IBM informed in a press release that it’s in going to build a supercomputer that will be capable of a peak performance more than 1.6 petaflops, i.e. 1.6 thousand trillion calculations per second. The new supercomputer dubbed ‘Roadrunner’ will be four times faster than BlueGene/L(a supercomputer also built by IBM).
Gaming chips will be migrated from Sony’s PS3 console to supercomputers and the device will be finished until 2008 at U.S. Department of Energy’s Los Alamos National Laboratory. In the supercomputer, 16,000 standard processors will be engaged besides16000 cell processors, designed for the PS3, each chip containing eight processors. Each cell enables 256 billion calculations per second. The team hopes to procure 100,000 machines.
The huge machine will cover 12,000 square feet space at Los Alamos National Laboratory.
