According to the Moore’s Law approximately after every two years the ICs will double in transistor capacity and speed.
The only way for the companies to increase the number of transistors on the chip was to compress the transistors so that more and more of transistors can be integrated on the same chip without increasing the chip size.
HP has now developed a new technique that can be used to develop chips that have more number of transistors without increasing the chip size or compressing the transistors. The company has stated that the technique can be used to integrate eight times the number of transistors that are on current chips.
These chips will be faster and more energy efficient. The secret behind the technique is the use of communication wires on top of transistors instead of in between them. The wiring is like a nanoscale wire mesh with switches at the junctions.
The company has also claimed that they will be able to bring the technology in the market by 2010.
