After a long delay, Advanced Micro Devices Inc (AMD) is again coming back with its new microprocessor code named Barcelona to prove it is not a one-hit wonder in chips for server systems.

Barcelona, to be formally known as quad-core Opteron processor, provides calculating engines for the midsize machines, which run websites and other key business programs. AMD CEO, Hector Ruiz will formally launch the microprocessor during an event in San Francisco. AMD’s Barcelona is not only important for an AMD turnaround but also server markets, who are searching for higher performance and lower price microprocessor.

The Barcelona is specifically designed to improve communication between processors. It has an improved circuitry model for complex chores called floating-point calculations. Earlier, dual-processor Opterons had advantage to fetch data from memory chips. AMD’s Barcelona operates at a maximum frequency of 2.0 gigahertz, which is a bit slower than expectations.

Barcelona will come in three different categories for high-performance, standard issue and energy-efficient server models. The two standard and three energy efficient processors are now available for two-socket servers, while the high-performance processors would be available by the end of this year. Two processors for four-socket servers would be available for both standard and energy efficient categories. AMD is adopting a scheme to measure the average power consumption of its chips.
